남정현이라는 작가와 그의 문학은 현대사의 정치적인 굴절과 밀접하게 맞닿아 있다. 정치권력의 압력과 정세의 변화는 남정현의 창작활동을 근본적으로 규정한 요인이었다. 이는 작가 본인은 물론 문학사와 작가론의 입장에서도 불행한 일이다. 그의 문학에 대한 연구가 「분지」필화를 중점에 둔 저항문학으로서의 선도성이라는 관점에 치중되어 동어반복적인 경향을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 이 논문은 이러한 관점에서 벗어나 남정현 문학의 당대적 성격에 주목하였다. 즉 그의 문학의 선도성과 저항성이 독보적인 것이라고 해도 그것은 1960년대라는 사회에서 산출된 것으로 당시의 사회적 맥락과 연관되어 해석되어야 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 1958~1965년의 남정현의 문학을 작품에 나타난 성-여성의 의미를 해명하고 당대 문학장과 반공주의와의 연관 하에 분석하였다. 남정현의 문학에서 성-여성은 철저하게 부정적인 측면으로만 다루어진다. 이는 개인적인 욕망에 대한 부정을 의미하는 것으로 그 이면에는 작가의 지식인적이고 윤리적인 세계인식이 내재되어 있다. 이로 인해 그의 작품에는 민중의 모습이 거의 보이지 않는다. 반면 이러한 인식은 얼핏 보아 평지돌출이라는 수사를 가능하게 할 만큼 선도적인 발언으로 발현된다. 남정현 작품에 나타난 당대의 정치적인 상황이나 반공주의에 대한 비판은 유례를 찾을 수 없을 만큼 본질적이고 날카롭다. 이러한 작품의 특징은 필화로 드러나기도 한다. 그러나 여기에는 단지 남정현 문학의 특징만이 아니라 당시의 급변하던 정치정세와 문학장의 문제가 개입되어 있었다고 보인다. 결론적으로 남정현은 사회학적이거나 정치적인 측면에서 세계를 바라본 작가라기보다 재기발랄한 감각과 탁월한 문학적 재능이 윤리의식으로 조율된 작가이다. 그가 만일 정치적이거나 사회학적인 측면에서 세계를 파악했다면 현실비판의 선명성은 도리어 둔화되었을지도 모른다. 남정현의 날카로운 감수성과 윤리의식은 1960년대 전반기라는 특수한 시기에 정치권력과 반공주의의 본질을 꿰뚫는 희귀한 작품을 창작할 수 있게 한 원동력이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Nam"s writing activities are intimately related to the political changes of Korean modem history. The political pressure and the change of situation constrained Nam"s writing activities to the roots. This was unfortunate not only to the writer himself but also to the study on Korean literary history and writers. The studies on his works have been concentrated to their leadership in the resistance literature, with emphasis on the 〈Bun-ji〉 case. As a result, they bear a tendency of tautologies. In this article, we try to overcome the previous viewpoints and note on the historical properties of Nam"s works. Though his writings clearly bear leadership and resistant characters in their time, they were produced from the society in the sixties and thus should be understood in the context of that society. In order to achieve this, we clarified the meanings of the sex-females in Nam"s novels in 1958~1965 and analysed them in relation to the field of literature and anti-communism. The sex-females in Nam"s novels appear to be drastically negative. This means the denial of the individual desires. The intellectual and ethical world-understandings of the writer are carved in the other side. As a result, the characters of populace are almost missing in his novels. On the other hand, this understanding appears as leading voices which can be termed as the pop-outs from a flat. Nam"s comments on the political situation and anti-communism are uniquely keen and radical. But this should not be attributed to the characteristics of his writings only: also the rapidly changing political situation and the field of literature should be taken into account. In conclusion, the main appraisal on Nam"s novels should be attributed to the talented sense and the ethics-tuned literary gift: not to the sociological/political viewpoint. If his eyes were on the political and social side, the clarity of his criticisms might have turned to be dull. Nam"s keen ethical sensibility was the root of his power to produce the unparalleled works which penetrate the essence of the political power and anti-communism in his time.
