Abstract
This article analyses the criticism on the indulgences by Wyclif and his followers in late medieval England. The doctrine of indulgences had significant changes since its introduction in the late eleventh century up until Luther’s Reformation in 1517. The sales of indulgences had increased significantly when the concept “Treasury of Merits” was accepted officially by the Catholic church in the mid-fourteenth century. However, the indulgences for the dead ― another important doctrine of indulgences coming together with the invention of Purgatory ― had not been allowed yet. The criticism of Wyclif and the Lollards upon the indulgences is positioned in between the two major doctrinal developments. When Martin Luther attacked the Catholic church and the pope for abusing the sales of indulgences, he did not insist the total abolition of indulgences, but only denied the indulgences for the dead as he believed that the Catholic church had no jurisdictional power over the dead in Purgatory. Unlike Luther, Wyclif and his followers denied the efficacy of the indulgences completely as they argued that there might be no scriptural basis found in the doctrine of indulgences. Although Wyclif and his followers did not deal with in detail on indulgences, their voices for annulment of indulgences is clear enough and their view must be considered and acknowledged seriously as an important element of intellectual origin of the Reformation.
