초록

This study aims at interpreting the significance of the indulgences in the late medieval church and society in terms of its social function. Since its introduction in the late 11th century, the doctrine and theory of the indulgences were changed constantly to reflect the social needs. Therefore, it is not proper to regard the indulgences as a symbol of corruption of the medieval church because it had own unique function socially and economically as well as religiously. With such presumption in mind, this study tried to figure out the social roles of the indulgences in later medieval England. So far, there have been no much interests given to the indulgences in the study of the English Reformation. However, in the English society at the dawn of the Reformation, the indulgences had played a crucial roles in diverse ways. This study incorporated such roles into society and re-interpret the role of the indulgences in the social mirror beyond a simple device of the evil corruption as being a social safety network such as charity roles for the poor, the social infrastructure construction including churches, hospitals, bridges, roads and schools for the common goods of the state.
