프로문학의 윤리적—미학적 조건 - ‘내용 형식 논쟁’을 중심으로

이 글은 프로문학운동의 첫 논쟁으로 자리매김된 ‘내용형식 논쟁’의 경과를 다시 살핌으로써, 어떻게 프롤레타리아 문학의 주체들이 ‘문학’으로 지칭되던 부르주아 문학과 다른 재현의 문법을 모색하고 만들어내려 했는지를 조명한다. 서로 다른 미감과 의식을 담지하는 주체들의 간극을 확대하여 보여주며, 「철야」는 한쪽에서 다른 쪽으로의 변형 과정을 세밀하게 조명한다. 빈궁한 주체에게 그러한 물질적 조건과 생활에서 ‘맛’, ‘소리’, ‘건축’ 등이 어떻게 전혀 다르게 감수(感受)되고 의식되는지를 섬세하게 묘사함으로써, 이 소설은 주체가 자신의 기존 감각과 감성과 더 이상 ‘자연스러운’ 관계를 맺지 않으며 그 감수성의 형식과 단절되는 과정과 경험을 재현한다. 박영희는 묘사나 실감, 예술적 형식이 프롤레타리아 문학에서 폐기될 수 있다는 것이 아니라 어떤 ‘현실’과 ‘실재감’에 대한 어떤 형식의 재현이 프로문학/문인의 모델이 되어야 할지를 모색하는 일이 프로문학의 과제라는 점을 강조했다. ‘내용형식 논쟁’을 계기로 카프가 ‘박영희 노선’을 취했다고 한다면, 그 집단적 결정은 이전 시기에 무징의 ‘문학’, ‘실감’, ‘현실’이라고 지시되던 규범적 틀에 대한 비판과 반성으로서의 문학을 계속 견지해나가며 심화 발전시키기 위한 경로를 카프가 택했음을 의미한다. 부르주아가 지배적 지위에 있는 사회의 ‘정상적 규범’이 지시하는 문학과 다른 문학을 수행하기 위해 ‘문인’으로서나 ‘문학’으로서 실패하기를 무릅쓴 프로문학운동은 ‘정치’를 위해 ‘미학’을 수단화한 행위가 아니라 엄밀한 의미의 미학적인 실천으로서 집단적으로 추구되었다. 프로문학이 미학적 힘을 발휘할 수 있는 조건과 윤리적일 수 있는 조건은, 프로문인이 문학을 통해 기성의 문인 주체성을 의문시하고 자기 확신의 기반을 손상시킨다는 반성적 실천에서 구조적으로 만난다. ‘내용형식 논쟁’을 통해 표명된바 판단에 있어 ‘프로문인’의 자기 확신과 자기 주장에 대한 반감 및 주체로서의 자기 분열과 자기 소외라는 원칙은 이후 미학적 공동체로서의 카프에서 견지된다.
Abstract
By examining the development of the ‘Content vs. Form’ debate as the first debate within the Proletarian Literary Movement, this article explores how the subjects of proletarian literature sought to produce a grammar of representation different from that of bourgeois literature. With a detailed description of discrepancies in taste and consciousness between the subjects, the "Staying up All Night" illuminates the transformative process of subjectivity. The fiction represents the protagonist’s experience of breaking off from his previous form of sensibility, showing how a subject’s perception and thoughts change under the material condition of poverty. Park Young-hee didn’t advocate discarding description, reality and artistic form in proletarian literature but rather stressed that the proletarian literature must find a form of representing a ‘reality’ for the model for proletarian literature/writer. If KAPF chose the path of ‘Park Young-hee route’ with impetus from the ‘Content vs. Form Debate’, it was a collective decision aimed at furthering the development of literature of critique and reflection, in contrast to the ‘literature’ and ‘reality’ of bourgeois literature. The proletarian literary movement, running the risk of failure as both writers and literature in a society dominated by the bourgeoisie, was not an instance of political manipulation of art, but rather an aesthetic practice of the community. The conditions for proletarian literature to exert the aesthetic force and be ethical meet structurally within the reflective practice of questioning the existing subjectivity and damaging the foundation of self-confidence. After the ‘Content vs. Form Debate’, KAPF consistently upheld principles of repugnance for self-confidence and self-assertion in judgment and of self-division and self-alienation as part of its identity as a aesthetic community.
