Abstract

This article critically examines Baek Nak-cheong’s literary theories of the 1990s while exploring their broader implications and effects on the literary regime of that period. For this purpose, the article is based on the premise that the encounter between Baek Nak-cheong and Shin Kyung-sook constituted a significant literary- historical event that legitimized the formation of the 1990s literary regime both literarily and institutionally. During this period, Baek Nak-cheong’s project emphasized the importance of creating “good works” as a creative defensive stronghold against the dominant trend of the global capitalist market. Within this context, Shin Kyung-sook’s The Remote Room emerged as a rare and notable “Mool-geon(A remarkable work)” of its time. Baek’s notion of the “triumph of realism,” articulated in his critique of The Remote Room, reflects a 1990s iteration of his literary idealism, which sought to navigate the post-ideological, post-movement era. However, the literary potential that Baek identified in The Remote Room was, in essence, an “imaginary” construct sustained by a fetishistic denial of the work’s inherent self-centered tendencies—rooted in the author’s non-ideological, asocial, and individualistic worldview. In this light, The Remote Room became a discursive space where the post-ideological and anti-realist literary idealism of Mundong intersected with the post-camp realist literary idealism of Changbi under the shared banner of “Literature in its Pure form.” This convergence of ideals facilitated a series of negotiations and compromises that retrospectively endowed the pre-existing Changbi-Munji-Mundong triangular structure—central to the 1990s literary field—with new institutional legitimacy. This was achieved through the master-signifier of “literature,” consolidating what can be termed a “literary regime.” Ultimately, the encounter between Baek Nak-cheong and Shin Kyung-sook provided a critical framework that sanctioned and legitimized the rise of post-ideological literary idealism as the dominant species in 1990s literature.
