Abstract
A Study on Han Kang’s French Translation works – Four hands translation. With the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to author Han Kang, it is now the moment to academically spotlight the translators who have been instrumental in bringing Korean literature to the global stage. In the case of Korean-French literary translation, which has played a significant role in promoting Korean literature abroad, the dominant method, unlike in other language spheres, is a collaborative team translation. This typically involves a translator who translates from Korean into French and a native French-speaking editor who reviews and refines the translation. For the vast majority of translations, the work is carried out by teams, composed of translators with strong proficiency in both French and literature, and revisers who are specialists in fields such as culture, publishing, and academia. The translation process generally involves an initial translation, revision, and subsequent re-revision. In the case of three prominent translation teams currently active, the revisers, who cannot read Korean, contribute with linguistic and non-linguistic editing based on fidelity to the target language, understanding of the literary world in the work, internal consistency, and stylistic coherence. Fidelity to the original text is ensured with the translator’s rigorous review, and the team members work in close, organic collaboration. In translation studies, translation into a non-native (B) language has increasingly been accepted due to the complex nature of current intercultural exchanges. Given that many works translated with this collaborative model have been recognized by the French literary world, winning awards and receiving media attention, this team-based translation approach should not be seen as a mere compromise, but rather as a valid and effective method for producing high-quality literary translations.
