Abstract
This study analyzed the overall reception and discussion of Han Kang’s literature in Chinese society since 2013, from three aspects as translation, research trends, and media coverage. A total of sixteen publications of Han Kang’s works have been published in China as of April 2025. A total of seventeen short stories, five novels, and 60 poems have been translated. Han Kang has recently been introduced to China most actively among Korean writers. This is due to a combination of factors such as the boom of Korean women’s literature that began around 2010, the reboot of feminism, the increasing influence of Chinese female readers, the formation of a local self-generated publishing market, and winning international literary awards. The characteristics of the research field are as follows. First, starting with the award of a major literary award, the research subject has expanded from Vegetarian to all works introduced to China, and the research diversity and analysis methodology have been improved. Second, Han Kang’s literature are recognized as a measure for understanding recent Korean literature. Third, a review of modern Korean history is being conducted through Han Kang’s works. In addition, discussions are being held focusing on issues that serve as the background for understanding the works, such as Korean society, systems, and social issues. In the media, objective reports are being conducted, such as news of literary awards, commentary on the works, and commentary on literary evaluations. Meanwhile, issues such as the translation issue and fairness of the Nobel Prize, the discrepancy between the national discourse on historical events and the individual voice of the author, and the difficulties in publishing Human Acts due to publication censorship are being discussed as major issues that reflect critical perspectives on Han Kang’s literature.
