1707년의 잉글랜드와 스코틀랜드의 통합을 해석함에 있어 여전히 잉글랜드의 군사적 팽창에 스코틀랜드가 굴복했거나 혹은 잉글랜드가 조성한 경제적 이점에 스코틀랜드가 일방적으로 유인된 것처럼 바라보는 시각이 존재한다. 그러나 1707년의 사건은 스코틀랜드가 오랜 기간 염원한 해외팽창과 무역발달이라는 내부적 동기를 고려할 때 종합적 해석이 가능하다. 이런 점에서 다리엔 사업과 같은 1707년경의 해프닝들에만 집착하는 경제적 서술은 통합의 경제적 측면을 지나치게 협소하게 보게 된다. 따라서 기존의 서술들은 스코틀랜드인들이 경제의 장기적, 구조적, 국제적 의미의 측면에서 이 문제를 바라보았던 시각에 의해 보강되어야 한다. 또한 1707년의 통합의 설명에서 제국은 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 18세기 초에 연합왕국을 이루는 과정에는 잉글랜드인과 스코틀랜드인들이 인지할 만한 수준의 제국 지향성이 담겨져 있었다. 그리고 상당수의 사람들은 1707년 이전에 자국의 해외 경제팽창을 추구하는 가운데 제국이 내포하는 기회의 경제적 측면을 인식하고 있었다. 따라서 제국이 제공할 수 있었던 잠재적 이익들은 1707년 통합이 성립되는 과정 속에서 협상가들이 고려했던 실제적 변수로 작용했다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
In regards to the Anglo-Scottish Treaty of Union in 1707, two popular interpretations arise from 1) the military expansion of England and 2) the Scottish integrated with England because the Scottish were attracted to the economic benefits of alignment. However, a comprehensible interpretation of the event is possible when internal factors such as the Scotland’s long-existing motivation to expand and develop overseas trading are considered. In this regard, focusing only on economic aspect, such as a failure of the Darien Scheme in the 1690s, limits economic view in the integration. Accordingly, past records must be supplemented with Scottish long-term, structural, and international economic views. Furthermore, the British Empire held a central position in the 1707 union. In the process of establishing the United Kingdom, both the English and Scottish perceivably pursued an empire-like-country. Many were aware of the economic opportunities the empire provided during the pre-1707 expansion. Therefore, these potential economic interest provided by the empire could have worked as a variable used by the negotiators during the 1707 union.
