Abstract
More than thirty years after the Los Angeles riots, efforts to preserve the event as a shared cultural memory have become increasingly visible within the Korean American community. A new generation has emerged—one that did not directly experience the unrest but identifies deeply with the trauma inherited from their parents or the broader community, and seeks to move beyond the dominant affective frameworks of the previous generation. Drawing on Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, this paper refers to this group as the postmemory generation of the LA riots and examines how they are actively engaged in rewriting the history of the event. Focusing on Steph Cha’s Your House Will Pay, the study analyzes how the novel reimagines public memory of the LA riots through the lenses of generation, gender, and race, thereby illuminating previously marginalized dimensions of the Korean American experience.
