Abstract
This study focuses on the romance and social movement of Dong-ok, the female protagonist in Yi Tae-jun’s novel Hwagwan(Flower Crown) (1937), and reveals that the novel exceeds the author’s intentions to derive a kind of feminist narrative. While Yi Tae-jun emphasized romance as a means of creating ideological comrades for national liberation, the novel itself concluded with female characters forming an ideal female community without romance, thereby achieving women’s liberation. Yi Tae-jun revealed Ellen Key’s view of romance, which stated that only good people should engage in love and marry, by limiting Dong-ok’s conditions for love to the values of her male counterpart. However, by rejecting pregnancy and childbirth, which caused problems with providing for the family, even the good man was unable to stay by Dong-ok’s side because he had sexual desires, and Dong-ok took on the role of a public mother in society rather than in the family. Later, when Dong-ok developed her own theory of human relation which was similar to Kropotkin’s theory of mutual aid and formed a women’s community, Yi Tae-jun brought back the male character Park In-cheol in an attempt to reincorporate Dong-ok into the narrative of national liberation. However, this attempt ultimately failed as it was appeared as an intrusion by the man into the women’s community. The ending, in which Dong-ok built a women’s community without any romance, exceeded the author’s intentions, and Yi Tae-jun expressed dissatisfaction with the characteristic of newspaper novels that the author followed the characters. However, in other words, he demonstrated his artistic integrity by faithfully depicting the dynamic possibilities unfolded by female characters who have escaped patriarchal oppression in accordance with the internal logic of the narrative.
