Abstract
This study points out that the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has caused a fundamental shift in traditional reading practices and aims to define the redefined status and role of the reader. For centuries, reading has operated under an implicit hermeneutic contract, trusting the text as a product of human intention. Accordingly, the reader assumed the role of an agent who constructs meaning by exploring the author’s intent embedded within the text. However, texts generated by AI have created a phenomenological rupture in this reading paradigm. Readers now face a complex set of issues including the ontological ambiguity of the text, an increase in epistemological uncertainty, and the need to re-evaluate established hermeneutic criteria. This transformation is substantiated through the analysis of two distinct case studies. First, the case of Rie Kudan’s novel, Tokyo-to Dojo-to, demonstrates a pattern of ‘back-inference reading’, where external information (the author’s confession of AI use) prompts the reader to distinguish between human and machine-generated portions of the text. This transforms the text from a unique work of art into a site where human and non-human traces intersect, turning the reader into an analyst who tracks algorithmic footprints. Second, Vauhini Vara’s essay, “Ghosts,” presents a contrasting strategy, offering a different reading protocol. By transparently revealing her collaborative process with AI, the essay leads the reader to perform a ‘relational reading’, which takes the creative process itself as the object of interpretation. In doing so, the reader is positioned not as a detective unraveling the text’s secrets, but as a witness to the ongoing process of meaning-making that unfolds through the interaction between human and machine. This study argues that these two reading protocols are complementary phenomena that herald the emergence of the ‘meta-reader’, a reader who delves beyond the surface of the text to read its conditions and process of generation. The meta-reader does not merely receive meaning but engages in a civic practice of critically examining the text’s existence within a complex network of human and non-human agents (authors, algorithms, datasets, etc.). Therefore, the reception of literature in the age of AI moves beyond the traditional author-text framework and is redefined within a relational network of reader-text-technology-society. This not only expands the theoretical scope of reception aesthetics but also suggests a new direction for literary studies in the age of AI.
