Abstract

This essay examines current researches that present various perspectives on British colonial Australian immigration, and tries to set the stage for thinking about what these suggest for on-going studies of the field. First of all, it focuses on the studies of the first half of the 19th century, which are somewhat marginalized in the field of Australian immigration history, and examines what these studies are exploring with regard to the period. In particular, besides the industrial society’s problems that have been noted by existing academia or the Great Britain’s economic-centered analyses, this study considers what was the problems related to the increase in immigration & emigration during this period. Above all it tries to seek for the development of immigration study with an extended perspective, requiring diversification of the subject, such as the purposes and intentions that may vary depending on immigration and migration-related subjects and objects, as well as aspects of policies and situations, and immigration-oriented thinking.
