초록

This study presents an expanded view on ‘British emigration to colonial Australia in the first half of the nineteenth century’ by examining not only the historiography but also the conditions, currents, actual practices, discourses and social thinking on colonial immigration. Regarding immigrants, it confirms that they were considered capable of contributing to the prosperity of the British Empire. Regarding incentives for immigration, it finds that strict eligibility criteria were applied for providing assistance and selecting “sound emigrants” ; consequently, attempts to bypass these were also observed. Concerning the social thinking behind colonial immigration, it affirms that the increase in immigration to the colony Australia was not only based on the idea of the ‘expansion of the British Empire’ or solving socio-economic problems, but also on the conceptual thinking that recognized the colony.
