Abstract
Dermatophytes had been studied by many dermatologists and nine(9) species have been identified in Korea. Trichophyton genera isolated from patients are Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Trichophyton verrucosum was for the first time identified in Korea in 1986. The authors have tried to make a Potato dextrose cornmeal agar(PDCA) more convenient for routine mycological laboratory study than Sabouraud dextrose agar(SDA). Trichophyton rubrum made a fast absorption of KOH solution added on to their colonies on PDCA and it was much easier to differentiate them from other dermatophytes. Eleven(11) strains of Trichoph，verrucosum grew on Trichophyton agar # 2 and 11 strains absorbed fast KOH solution added on to their colonies on PDCA. Candida albicans also formed chlamydospores and pseudohyphae on PDCA. PDCA is more useful in isolation and identification of pathogenic fungi than SDA.
