Abstract
This paper analyzed the correlation between exchange rates and domestic stock index of 5 countries for 3 years and 10 months from January 1, 2019 to October 21, 2022 using the VAR model. The analysis results are as follows. First, as a result of the Granger causal relationship analysis, it was found that the stock index had a preemptive effect on the five major exchange rates (Dollar, Yuan, Yen, Euro, and Pounds). Second, the stock index appeared to have an effect on all five exchange rates up to a certain time lag before disappearing, but all five exchange rates appeared to have very little or no effect on the stock index. Third, the stock index responded with a weak influence to the five major exchange rates, but the five major exchange rates responded with a stronger influence by the stock index indicating that the stock index affects the exchange rates of major countries. It could be inferred to support the analysis results and the shock response function analysis results. Combining the results of this study, it is considered a meaningful study that the stock index as a leading index to explain the economic outlook precedes and influences the exchange rate, which is one of the macroeconomic indicators. However, among the five exchange rates after Corona 19, only the yen showed a negative correlation with the stock index, which showed a phenomenon in which the exchange rate fell and the won value appreciated differently from other exchange rates. It will be able to suggest implications for exchange rate management to companies.
