몽테스키외와 볼테르의 오리엔탈리즘에 대한 비교

오리엔탈리즘은 서구 우월주의적인 시각에 의해서 비서구 사회에 대한 열등함을 주장하는 서구 인식에 대한 비판적 관점이다. 사이드에 의해 수행된 오리엔탈리즘 연구는 그러나 아랍 지역 연구에 제한되어 있었다. 이 연구는 사이드가 발전시킨 오리엔탈리즘으로부터 순수 논리 구조를 추출하여 그것을 여러 지역과 여러 사상에 확대시키려는 오리엔탈리즘의 종합적 연구의 연장선에 서, 불란서의 계몽주의 사상가 몽테스키외와 볼테르의 중국관에 들어 있는 오리엔탈리즘적 요소를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 결과는 두 사상가들은 중국을 빌어 루이 14세와 15세의 전제주의 정치를 비판하는 것이었다는 것이다. 중국의 열등함 자체를 부각시키는 것이 두 사람의 중국관의 목적은 아니었다는 결론에 이르게 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 특히 몽테스키외의 중국관은 그의 의도와는 무관하게 오리엔탈리즘으로 오해될 소지가 있고 그 이후 서구 오리엔탈리즘의 재생산에 기여하게 되었을 가능성을 남겨두고 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this article is to compare Orientalism in the thoughts of Montesquieu and Voltaire. Orientalism is the critic about Western thoughts, that non-Western societies are inferior to Western societies. As is wel known, the founder of Orientalism is Edward Said. However, his analysis of Orientalism has ben often criticized to be carried mainly in the area of Arab, not including Asia. In this context, this study is one of comprehensive interdisciplinary studies, whose purpose is to extend the aplication of Orientalism to Asia, especially China. The main thesis of this study is: The original aim of both Montesquieu's and Voltaire's viewpoint on China was not to show the inferiority of China at that time, but to criticize the despotism of the Louis XIV and XV through the comarison of China. Nevetheless, the writer has made a special effort to show that, irrespective of Montesquieu's intention, it is still possible to criticize his perception of China as a sort of Orientalism, thereby contributed toward the reproduction of Western Orientalism.
