『페르시아인의 편지』의 오리엔탈리즘 연루(連累)에 대해

몽테스키외의 『페르시아인의 편지』는 논쟁적인 작품이다. 한편으로, 그 작품은 문화를 가로지르는 상호 이해와 종교 간 관용을 강조하는 시의적절한 고전으로 칭송을 받지만, 다른 한편으로 오리엔탈리즘을 보이는 작품으로 비판을 받는다. 이 글은 (반)오리엔탈리즘의 측면에서 그 작품을 분석한다. 우리는 『페르시아인의 편지』의 구조에서 분명 오리엔탈리즘을 볼 수 있다. 그 소설은 동양을 서양의 타자로 재현하며 페르시아를 프랑스의 정체성에 대한 보완물로 창조한다. 그러나 그 작품은 자신의 오리엔탈리즘 성격의 구조를 드러내고 그것에 대해 논평한다. 이러한 특징은 특히 리카의 편지에서 잘 확인된다. 이것이 의미하는 바 가운데 하나는, 우리가 어떤 저작에서 오리엔탈리즘을 확인하다해도, 그것으로 작품의 성격 전체를 규정하지 않도록 주의해야 한다는 것이다.
Abstract
Montesquieu's Persian Letters is a disputative work. On the one hand, it is praised as a timely classic for its accentuating cross-cultural understanding and interfaith toleration, but on the other hand, it is criticized as an orientalistic fiction. This article analyzes that work in terms of (anti)orientalism. We definitely can see orientalism in the structure of Persian Letters. It represents the Orient as the other of the Occident and invents Persia(n) as complement to French identity. The work, however, discloses and comments upon its own orientalizing structure, especially through Rica's letters. This fact, I think, gives us a lesson concerning our criticism of a literary work in terms of orientalism. Even though we can see orientalism in some work, we should be careful not to define the character of the work totally by that 'ism'.
