Abstract
Modernity, which has been promoted energetically in the vision of utopia, paradoxically reveals its incompetence, from which people cannot help undergoing structural embarrassments and catastrophes over and over in the ongoing process of civilization. The classical paradigm sees the modern daily living world a social order constructed by rationality. This modernity, as a rational constitution, turns out a deception, and produces everyday-based irrational violences. Around the end of the 20th century, people hence began to be aware that modern rationality is connected with its irrationality all the time. In an effort to find a way with which we can handle desperate problems with modernity, this paper notices dialectic characteristics which modernity has deep within its dual nature, as the dialectic of freedom and order conceptualized by Kant, and as the duality of rationality and irrationality by Weber. And then it reviewed both Ulrich Beck's cognitive possibility of re-enlightenment and Habermas's reason of practice or action for the common good, in order to demonstrate that there is no hope to the concept of modernity without self-reflection, based on Adorno who has brought the insufficiency of the human reason in cognition and morality. Finally, it shows that art would be a kind of agency putting the self-reflection of human reason into action.
