동북아시아 유학생의 상호인식 - 사회적 거리감과 국가 정체성

동북아 역내 국가 간 상호의존성이 점차 심화되는 현상은 경제와 무역 분야 뿐아니라 대중문화, 여행, 취업 등 일상생활에서도 체감되고 있다. 본 논문은 한중일 유학생 설문조사 자료를 통해 동북아 국가 사람들의 상호인식과 국가정체성의양상을 ‘아래로부터의’ 관점에서 분석한다. 한․중․일 유학생들이 이웃 나라 국민, 그리고 미국인에 대한 사회적 거리감을 비교한 결과, 미국인을 상대적으로 더친근하게 느끼는 ‘미국인 선호’가 공통적으로 나타났다. 회귀분석에서는 사회적 거리감이 접촉 경험, 감정적 평가, 그리고 정체성 요인들에 의해 어떤 영향을 받는지 분석하였다. 유학생들이 현재 유학 중인 거주지 사람들을 보다 친근하게 느끼는 이른바 접촉 효과는 일본인에 대한 거리감에서만 유의미하게 나타났다. 또한이웃 국민에 대한 감정 평가가 긍정적일수록 사회적 거리감이 줄어드는 효과도 나타났다. 정체성 요인을 세 가지 층위로 나누어 분석한 결과, 자국중심 정체성이강할수록 미국인과 중국인에 대한 거리감은 좀 더 멀어지는 반면, 국제협력과 공존을 중시하는 세계인 정체성이 강할수록 역으로 미국인과 중국인에 대한 거리감이 좁혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 국가중심적인 민족주의가 여전히 강하고 이른바 ‘부재하는 현존’으로써 미국(서구)적 가치를 따라잡기 위해 국가간 경쟁을 당연시해온동북아 지역에서 역내 협력과 상호 이해의 가능성과 지향점에 대해 많은 시사점을제공한다. 국가간 관계의 차원 뿐 아니라 아래로부터의 사회문화적인 접촉의 증가, 특히 역내 유학의 확대가 이른바 ‘사회적 아시아’(social Asia)를 활성화하는 촉매제로 작용할 잠재력을 주목하고 이를 뒷받침하는 정책적 노력도 체계화할필요가 있다.
Abstract
Interdependency among Northeast Asian countries - Korea, Japan, and China – has been expanded not only in inter-government relations and trade areas but also in various aspects across everyday lives such as mass media, tourism and lifestyle trends, and personal relations like intercultural marriages. Recognition on intra-regional relations and regional identities in Northeast Asia needs to be analysed based on a “bottom-up” perspective. For this purpose, this article observes a survey result of Northeast Asian students who are studying in adjacent countries, and analyzes social distance and related attitudes toward national/transnational identities among these students. Measured by Borgadus scales, Northeast Asian students commonly express closer feelings toward Americans than adjacent regional residents. Respondents who are studying in Japan tend to present more intimate attitudes toward Japanese people than those who are studying in Korea and China. This means so-called ‘contact hypothesis’ among international students is only applicable to Japanese case. In terms of national and transnational identities, we find that the strong sense of national identity tend to extend social distance against Chinese and Americans. On the other hand, respondents who positively internalize international and cosmopolitan attitudes incline to feel closer to Chinese and Americans. Whether the extension of intra-regional student exchange programs may contribute to activating ‘social Asia’ as bottom-up networks in sociocultural relations in Northeast Asian region needs to be investigated in future researches.
