서서평의 누미노제 체험과 지역사회서비스의 이해 - 칼 융의 무의식 이론에 기대어
Study on A Local Social Service Focusing on Elisabeth J. Shepping’s Numinose Experience with Special Reference to Carl Gustav Jung’s Unconscious Theory

이 글은 1912년부터 1934년까지 조선 땅에서 무명의 간호사로서 활동한서서평(Elisabeth J. Shepping, R.N. 1880-1934)의 매우 독특한 근대적지역사회서비스를 그녀의 누미노제체험과 관련해서 해명하여 이해하는 데 지향되어 있다. 그녀의 독특한 신비체험, 곧 누미노제체험을 칼 구스타프 융(Carl G. Jung, 1875-1961)의 무의식이론에 기대어 분석해 보고자 한다. 필자는 이러한연구에 꼭 필요하지만 대단히 희귀한 1차 자료를 다음과 같은 글 속에서 발견하였다. 서평의 동료 중의 한 사람인 로이스 스윈하트(Lois Hawks Swinehart)가쓴 “엘리제 요한나 서서평- 또 하나의 드보라 선교사”(Elise Johanna Shepping: A Missionary Deborah)가 그것이다(Swinehart, 1937: 145-184). 그것은서평 자신의 삶의 여정에 대한 짤막한 회고적 진술들로 이루어져 있다. 분석을 통해 발견된 사실은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서평의 대단히 불우한 어린 시절은 그녀의 정신적 에너지인 리비도를 내적 심연으로 내향화 시켰다. 리비도의 에너지가 현실생활로 흘러갈 수 있게 만드는 다리의 역할을 해줄 부모가 없었기 때문이다. 둘째, 내면으로 흘러들어 간 리비도의 에너지는 무의식을 활성화해 누미노제적 특성을 지닌 집단적 무의식의 근원상인 원형을 출현시켰다. 셋째, 이러한 무의식의 원형들이 서평의 개신교 예배참석을 계기로 해서 기독교적 구원의 상징적 표상들을 발견하게 되었다. 그것은그녀의 정체되었던 리비도가 상징적 표상의 도움으로 한 차원 높은 종교적 신앙대상인 영적 예수에게로 흘러갈 수 있게 했다. 넷째, 그것은 서평이 예수 그리스도에게 사로잡혀 그를 섬기는 사명자로서의 삶 곧, 근대적 지역사회서비스를 선구자적으로 실천할 수 있게 한 원동력이었다. 다섯째, 영적인 예수에 완전히 사로잡힘은 서평이 의식하지도 못하는 사이에 인간적인 한계를 넘어서게 했다. 이 때문에 그녀는 많은 사람들이 추앙하는 성자적 삶을 영위했음에도 불구하고, 스푸루라는 질병에 의한 영양실조로 비극적인 죽음을 맞이하게 되었다.
Abstract
This study examines the special local social service of an unknown nurse Elisabeth J. Shepping focusing on her special Numinose experience beginning 1912 through 1934. In doing so, Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of unconscious will be borrowed and used to clarify some points that the author wish to make. Also, the rare and precious primary source of Elisabeth J. Shepping will be used to analyse her unconscious driving force in her life. The points that the author wish to make are as follows. First, Shepping’s poor and unhappy life internalized her libido –mental energy- into her inner abyss. For she did not have parents playing the role of bridge connecting her libido with her life. Second, the internalized libido energy makes her Archtype, which is the original Numinose collective unconscious, appear through actualizing her unconscious. Third, Shepping’s unconscious Archtype discovered symbols of Christian salvation through her conversion to Protestantism. Thus, her libido sublimed to Jesus spiritually through the help of this salvific symbol. This means that her religious life has been lifted up higher degree. Fourth, her such enhanced religious life of following Jesus’ footstep is the very driving force to make the modern local social service possible in early Korea. Fifth, her spiritual dedicating life to Jesus made her overcome the human limits without her own conscious. However, this leads Elisabeth Shepping to her tragic, heroic, and unexpected early death by malnutrition caused by a disease.
