Abstract

What caused wars on the Korean peninsula? How did they start and end? Focusing on power shift and geopolitics, this study aims to examine the occurrence and scale of interstate wars on the Korean peninsula since the sixteenth century. All (or most) of them were large-scale(high battle deaths) and multilateral(multiple participants) conflicts closely related with East Asian regional orders. The main causes of the wars were (1) power shift between major states and (2) strategic value of Korea. The Sino-Japanese War(1894-95) shows how their interaction caused and lengthened the clash between Japan and China and how the war changed the regional order from China-centered to Imperial. This study implies the twenty-first century Sino-US competition for strategic territories such as Korea is likely to intensify so long as their power gap decreases.
