Abstract
The subject of ‘transition’ has been frequently discussed in the field of international relations theory. A typical example is the debate between balance-of-power theory and power transition theory with regard to the result of power parity. Power transition theory has been used to explain many historical cases including issues of war and peace in East Asia. The Sino- Japanese war has been argued as a typical case which showing the combination of power transition and the existence of an ‘unsatisfying’ rising power Recent studies tell us that factors such as hegemony, civilization/order, and status/authority are also considered as objects of transition in addition to the power factor, and that there are contrasting analyses about the aspect of transition in similar cases. This study attempts to explore the various contents of transition theory and the relevance of different approaches of the transition process through a historical review of the Sino-Japanese war. After looking through diverse theoretical arguments about transition and applying them to the Sino-Japanese war, this article tries to emphasize the position of status/authority transition in explaining this case.
