본 연구는 중도(severe)·중복(multiple)장애를 가진 아동 어머니 M의 삶에 대한 것이다. 본 연구는 질적연구방법을 사용하였으며, 특히 생애사(life history)를 중심으로 하였다. 연구 자료는 심층 및 개방식 인터뷰를 통해 수집되었으며, 이외에도 참여 관찰(participant observations)과 문서들(written documents)을 활용하였다. 본 연구는 M의 이야기를 통해 M이 아들 S의 장애를 알게 된 과정과, S의 장애가 그녀와 다른 가족들과의 관계에 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지, 이후 M이 S의 장애에 대하여 어떻게 적응해 갔는지, 그리고 현재 그녀가 S의 발달과 교육을 위하여 어떠한 노력을 하고 있는지, 또한 사회적으로 어떠한 지원 서비스를 받고 있는지에 대하여 살펴보았다. 특히, M의 긍정적 적응에 영향을 미친 요인으로는, 가족 구성원으로부터의 지원, 전문가들로부터의 지원, 부모 자조모임에의 참여와 여러 가지 특수교육 관련 세미나의 참석, 그리고 종교적 지지인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 중도·중복장애 아동 어머니의 삶을 통해, 본 연구는 중도·중복장애 아동 어머니들의 긍정적 적응(adjustment)을 향상시키고 삶의 질을 높이기 위한 방법들을 모색해 보았다.
Abstract
This study investigated the life of a mother of a child with severe and multiple disabilities. This study used qualitative research methodology, especially focusing on life history. Data were collected from in-depth open-ended interviews, participant observations, and written documents. The participant of this study shared how she discovered her child had disabilities, how the birth of a child with disabilities has impacted her family relationships, what the stages of adaptation have been, how she has participated in her child's development and education, and what kinds of support have been available to her. Especially, the influencing factors on M's positive adjustment included the support from family members, the support from professionals, the participation on the parents' support group and seminars on special education, and the support from religion. Through the life of the mother with a child with severe and multiple disabilities, the study suggested the ways to improve the mothers' positive adjustment and their quality of life.
