성인 정신지체인을 돌보는 어머니의 대처전략 및 사회적 지지가 심리적 안녕감에 주는 영향

초록

만 19세～35세 사이의 성인 정신지체인을 자녀로 둔 어머니 158명에 대하여, 양육과제에 대한 대처전략과 사회적 지지가 어머니의 심리적 안녕감에 영향을 주는지를 분석하였다. 다중회귀분석 결과, 대처전략과 사회적 지지는 어머니의 인구학적 특성과 장애인 자녀의 특성을 고려하더라도 어머니의 심리적 안녕감에 영향을 줌을 알 수 있었다. 어머니가 정서중심대처를 많이 할수록 어머니의 우울과 주관적 부담은 심해지며, 모자관계는 부정적이었다. 어머니가 유용한 사회적 지지가 많다고 느낄수록 어머니의 우울과 주관적 부담은 약했으며, 모자관계는 긍정적이었다. 어머니의 문제중심대처의 정도는 우울과 주관적 부담에는 영향이 없었으며, 모자관계에만 긍정적 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 성인기 자녀를 보호하는 정신지체인 어머니 역시 필요한 문제중심대처를 할 수 있도록 하고 항시적인 정서중심대처를 하지 않도록 교육과 상담을 통해 지원이 필요하며, 다각도의 사회적 지원이 주어질 수 있도록 원조해야 한다.

Abstract

Effects of coping strategies and social support on psychological well-being among 158 aging mothers of adults with mental retardation were examined. Multiple regression analysis revealed that coping strategies and social support were predictors of maternal well-being controlling for maternal and adult child characteristics. Greater use of emotinon-focused coping predicted lower levels of maternal psychological well-being, whereas Greater use of problem-focused coping is only related to higher quality of the relationships between mother and adult child. Greater amount of perceived social support predicted higher levels of psychological well-being. The present study underscored the importance of coping strategies and social support in the lives of aging mothers of adults with disabilities.
