Abstract
This study investigates the influence of university background on entry into decent jobs, alongside changes over time. Previous research on the determinants of decent jobs has largely been constrained by using cross-sectional data or short-term studies and often hasn’t adequately considered university characteristics. Drawing on the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this study examined the differential probabilities of university graduates entering decent employment according to their region of graduation across an approximate two-decade period. Our findings indicate that gender, university type, and major all affect young people’s likelihood of securing decent jobs. Specifically, graduates of four-year private universities located in local regions are significantly less likely to transition into “decent jobs” compared to graduates of four-year universities in Seoul. This suggests that despite various institutional efforts over the past decades to mitigate the societal “Hakbeol,” which emerged over 30 years ago, continues to persist.
