Abstract
Since 2000, meritocracy has been a key issue in understanding the changes and structural characteristics of Korean society. Meritocracy provides the principle of economic compensation and influences the values of individuals and the future of the community. This study examines Korean meritocracy from the perspective of the historical and social construction of merit discourse. First, the study reviews the global context in which meritocratic ideologies and concepts are formed and implemented, analyzing the perspectives, practices, and disputes of the actors involved in shaping the concept of merit or ability in various countries. Second, it critically examines studies on meritocracy in Korean society. Third, it investigates the context in which the concept of merit or ability has been defined and employed in Korean society. Fourth, we investigate the development and characteristics of the meritocratic system in Korea since 2000, analyzing how the neoliberal shift has transformed and placed the merit or ability discourse established during the industrialization period in crisis. Finally, the study reflects on the dilemma faced by Korean meritocracy discourse, which is caught between national and individual utility, and explores possible future directions.
