Abstract
This study examines decisions of regional mobility for young women graduates of regional universities in South Korea to relocate for better jobs, considering socioeconomic inequalities and their personal job values. Using data from the 2020 「Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS)」 4,863 young individuals (2,244 women and 2,619 men) under the age of 34 who graduated from regional universities were analyzed. We examined the relationship between labor market entry and regional mobility for female graduates of regional universities through a sample selection bivariate probit model analysis. The analysis shows, firstly, that local young women are actively migrating in search of quality jobs. However, among migrant youth, the employment rate remains higher for males than for females. Secondly, the shortage of large-scale companies and local job opportunities, combined with high reservation wages, has been found to drive young women to relocate. Moreover, the choice of employment-oriented majors influences their ability to secure quality jobs within the region. Thirdly, young women with higher social capital and those who prioritize personal development in their job values are more likely to relocate. Notably, parental assets and social capital are found to have a greater influence on the employment prospects of young men compared to young women. The mobility and settlement of young women are influenced not only by personal factors but also by structural discrimination. To overcome this, it is necessary to develop active labor and education policies in the local labor market, taking into account family background.
