Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the consumer acculturation process of North Korean immigrants to South Korea and the role of possession as acculturation agent in the consumer acculturation process. Ethnography was employed for this research. We interviewed and observed eleven North Korean immigrants and then acquired data on their consumption patterns and lifestyles. And we analyzed this data, describing their consumer acculturation process in detail; we described their immigrant experiences from living their home country (North Korea) to arriving in the host country (South Korea), their consumption experiences in the third countries, and the first consumption experiences in South Korea. Then, we explained what possessions they have. Lastly, informants' acculturation outcomes was presented based on Berry's acculturation model, and the roles of their possessions in their acculturation outcomes was elucidated. Few of our informants showed integration and segregation outcomes, which are two types of acculturation outcomes that wish to maintain home cultural identity. Immigrants like North Korean who could not bring objects relevant to their origin county could not maintain their ties to their culture and families, which hindered to preserve their origin cultural identity. The informants who have acquired many possessions tended to show assimilation to South Korean consumer culture. On the other hand, informants who have little possessions showed the marginalization outcome. In sum, the results suggest that a possession plays an important role of acculturation agent, along with other agents including family, friends, media, institutions of culture of home country and those of culture of receiving country, in the consumer acculturation process. Based upon the results, this study provides several theoretical and policy implications.
