Abstract

How do Muslims from North Africa consume food in Korea? To search for the answers of this question, this study interpreted the interview data of fifteen people from Morocco and Algerie using Holt(1995)’s typology of consumption practice including experience, integration, play, and classification. The results show that they are experiencing a variety of food in Korean and evaluate and respond to them using their own frames of reference. Their food consumption practices are closely associated with their current and pursuing self-identities. In addition, they are found to employ food consumption extensively to increase enjoyment when they interact with others. Finally, they are using food consumption to make distinction from or associate with a particular group of people because the consumption practices are advantageous to reveal the extent to which they are accustomed to Korean culture while they keep their own cultural and religious principles. Based upon the results, this study provides several contributions to the consumer acculturation research area.
