Abstract

It’s not strange that consumers choose brand to express their self. But now, the brand is not always passive object which only get chosen by consumer. One’s cognition and behavior can be affected by the brand they chose. Not like choosing brand to express my image, but be affected by image the brand has after direct or indirect exposure to it. We are going to investigate that consumers cognition and behavior can be affected by brand experience. In this study, we used APPLE and SAMSUNG as prime because those two brands are known as prime competitors and they have distinguishable brand images which in contrast to APPLE’s innovative and creative associations, SAMSUNG is associated with organized and systematic. We chose anthropomorphism so we can observe how consumers actually think about the brands. We experimented two things through this study. First, whether exposed to a certain brand(i.e., brand priming) can effect one’s cognition or behavior. Second, if brand priming can affect to other products which shares similar image with prime brand’s. In first experiment, participants primed through anthropomorphism by imaging how the brand would be like if it were a human. After the brand priming, participants asked to complete the creativity tests and organizing tests in order. In second experiment, participants took the product evaluation about creative product(i.e., linked to creativity like APPLE) using either APPLE’s laptop or SAMSUNG’s. Two experiments show that consumers are more likely to assimilate behavior associated with primed brand. Results also show that priming effect can affect evaluating other products or brands that share similar image with primed brand. This suggests that priming effect can affect consumers’ behavior even more extensively.
