Abstract

This research investigates the influence of brand priming on the new product's evaluation and its perceived innovativeness. It posits that this effect occurs only when innovativeness is regarded as desirable. Also perceived innovativeness is suggested as the underlying mechanism by which the process occurs. The experiment consisted of two stages. In the first stage, as priming task, all subjects were randomly assigned to either a high or a low innovative brand condition then they responded to a survey. During the second stage, subjects watched printed ads and evaluated a new product unrelated to the initial survey, and were randomly assigned to one of four conditions that were manipulated by product incongruity level and product category. Findings show that brand priming is moderated by the interaction of the new product's incongruity level and product category. For the product category with positive relationship between perceived risk and product incongruity level, brand priming effect occurs only in a moderately incongruent product condition. On the other hand, for the product category with constant perceived risk regardless of its incongruity level, the priming effect occurs only in an extremely incongruent condition. We also used bootstrapping analysis to show that previous brand priming is mediated by perceived innovativeness. The current research makes a theoretical contribution to the theory showing that brand priming can facilitate the activation of a cognitive construct. It also offers managerial implication by explaining the effect of brand as a contextual stimulus. It would be worthwhile for future studies to investigate the effects of other dimensions of brand such as honesty or safety and to consider additional dependent variables such as choice or purchase intention.
