Abstract

Building a good corporate image is an important issue since it directly affects the profitability of the company. There are several studies that have identified differential effects by distinguishing corporate image associations between corporate ability and corporate social responsibility. However, the previous research has been confirmed that only the effect of the intervention factors from the firm and the product side, which mainly affect the firm ability. There is a need for research on the influence of the interaction of the macro variables such as culture and cultural factors. In this study, we tried to verify the interaction effect of corporate image association and cognitive style on the corporate evaluation, product purchase intention, and intention to recommend. The experiment was conducted using 2(corporate image association: corporate ability, corporate social responsibility) × 2(cognitive style: analytical thinking, holistic thinking) × 2(brand: real brand, hypothetical brand) between-subjects design. As a result, the interaction between corporate image type and cognitive style is significant on corporate evaluation and product purchase intention. The subjects who were primed by the analytical thinking evaluated the company preference and product purchase intention more favorably when they watch the advertisement emphasizing the corporate ability. And the subjects who were primed by the holistic thinking evaluated the company preference and product purchase intention more favorably when they watch emphasizing the corporate social responsibility. Based on these results, the implications about brand communication strategy and limitations of research and future directions of research were discussed.
