Abstract

Consumption space not only refers to a place for “product consumption”, where a variety of consumption-related phenomena appear, but also means “consumption of the space itself”, which contains the consumers’ meaning and interpretation of the space. Recently, many owners of consumption spaces have expressed interest in a “third space” where consumers can feel psychologically relaxed and comfortable. Coffee shops are playing the role of this third space, as the consumers use the coffee shop as a cozy and comfortable space like home as well as a meeting place. The coffee shop space is a place used by consumers according to subjective rather than objective factors. Therefore, it is important to understand the meaning that the coffee shop space possesses. This study examined how consumers in their twenties, who are the major coffee shop users, perceive the consumption space of coffee shops. For this purpose, the study implemented in-depth interviews that applied the projective technique and the image association technique. The study used a simultaneous mixed method design that combined qualitative and quantitative research. The results for the projection technique and the image association technique of each study were analyzed in a way that compensated the other. The results of the in-depth interviews that used the projective technique showed that the coffee shops were expressed as four spaces: 1) space for immersion, 2) space for healing, 3) space for showing off, and 4) space for contradiction. In a space for immersion, the consumers focused on their work, tasks, or person they were meeting in a restricted space. In a space for healing, consumers regarded the coffee shop as a place to find relief, and they felt psychologically relaxed there. In a space for showing off, the consumers tended to show off their secret places by sharing fancy coffee shops, which only they knew, with others. In a space for contradiction, the consumers felt a contradictory feeling in a space where loneliness and interaction coexist. Through the image association technique, specific images of the space were checked, and the meaning of the space was quantitatively analyzed. The coffee shop space was classified into eight categories of space: 1) space for resting (33.3%), 2) space for work (17.5%), 3) space for meeting (15%), 4) space for observation (11.3%), 5) space for showing off (9.16%), 6) space for switching (6.66%), 7) space for stimulation (3.75%), and 8) space for recharging (3.33%). This study’s results proved that consumers possess clear internal perceptions of the coffee shop space. Furthermore, the study confirmed that the coffee shop space is not only perceived as a place for drinking coffee but also is used with diverse intentions. This study is meaningful as it proposes implications for the differentiated consumption space that can reflect the consumers’ values and needs.
