Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of consumers’ knowledge and perceived similarity on the evaluation of the extended brand. Specifically, consumers’ knowledge about the parent brand is manipulated as to consist of two levels(high vs. low). Also, the perceived similarity between the parent and extended brands is divided by three levels(congruent vs. moderate incongruent vs. extremely incongruent). In particular, The reason of this three-level similarity is that although the moderate incongruent brand extensions are observed frequently in the real business world, prior researches are likely to focus on the two typical levels(congruent vs. incongruent). So, the main implication of this study is to investigate the secret area(the moderate incongruent brand extension). As a result, the similarity effect on the brand extension is moderated by the consumers’ knowledge about the parent brand. To put it concretely, the consumers with low knowledge are prefer the congruent brand extension. The consumers with high knowledge, however, prefer the moderate incongruent brand extension.
