Abstract
The objective of this research was to recognize the outcome of consumer’s purchasing intentions based on consumer product knowledge level when parent brands choose either symbolic or utilitarian corporation for incongruent extension. Brand extension has the effect of inducting consumer leverage using the parent brands as a background also has the advantage of minimizing marketing costs. Therefore, brand extension has been considered essential for business and entrepreneurship. There must be a strong compatibility between parent brand establishment and expansion brand/product in order for brand extension. However, recently brand extension with low compatibility have been surfacing. When the compatibility is low brand extension there is a clear risk; however, because it provides an opportunity to find new markets and causes a consolidation effect if successful, I felt that it was an important topic to further research. The research from the previously incongruent extension put marketing communications at the center of focus. Thus, several methodological research surfaced on how to minimize risk when going through an incongruent brand extension. However, in this research they divide the consumers into two groups based on the consumer’s product knowledge level either being experienced and non-experienced to analyze consumer consumption intention. Additionally, based on the products characteristics, they divided the virtual companies into either symbolic or utilitarian. The study examines the effects of purchase intension in incongruent brand extensions. And it focused on consumer's knowledge levels.
