Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate how the message framing affects the brand attitude of consumers, given the product type (utilitarian or hedonic) and the number of celebrity endorses. The message framing does not have direct influence upon the consumer behavior rather it usually relies on a number of moderate variables. In this context, a special focus of the present study is placed on the issue: to what extent the brand attitude is affected by the message framing, specially considering the source magnification effect as well as product type (utilitarian or hedonic). To this end, we set up two major hypotheses that are tested as follows, using ANOVA and ANCOVA. The experiment 1 investigates how the brand attitude is changed along with the message framing and product type. The results show that a positive message framing affects the brand attitude for the hedonic product. In contrast, for the case of utilitarian product, the brand attitude is more influenced by a negative message framing. The experiment 2 examines the interaction of a message framing and a source magnification effect on the brand attitude. Our empirical finding supports hypothesis 2-1, indicating that a message framing, together with source magnification, has an effect on the brand attitude. On the other hand, the experiment for hypothesis 2-2 produces unexpected result that shows the negative message framing effects on the brand attitude regardless of the numbers of celebrity endorses.
