Abstract
This study probes the effect of preempt point which was found at the loyalty program of many credit card companies. Preempt point is to provide reward to customers before they initiates it. However, customer who got reward in advance has obligation to redeem the preempt point through the contracted usage of credit card. Given that the purpose of loyalty program is to strengthen customer loyalty, the preempt point could be more appropriate reward scheme compared to post-point reward. Since previous studies only probe the effect of post-redeemed reward, this study tries to propose comprehensive view regarding reward timing in loyalty scheme and to probes the effect of consumer's regulatory focus and reward level as the factors for building consumer preference toward preempt or post-redeemed reward system. This study consists of 2 hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 manipulates point-redeemed style into 2types(preempt vs. post-redeemed) and divides the subjects into 2 groups(promotion vs. prevention)based on their regulatory focus scores. We conduct 2 x 2 ANOVA analysis to identify the effect of 2variables in building consumer preference toward reward scheme. The subjects with promotion focus tend to select the credit card company with preempt point reward system. In return, the subjects with prevention focus lean toward the credit card with post-redeemed reward. In addition, we found that the subject's perception of switching barrier in relation to each reward scheme coincides with our expectation. Thus, we think that it supports hypothesis 1. Hypothesis 2 explains that the reward level has relation with the consumer’s preference toward reward timing. We manipulates point-redeemed style into 2 types(preempt vs post-redeemed) and makes 2 groups according to reward level(high vs. low). High condition is explained to provide reward around 4% of total expenditure and low condition is proposed to give 1% of total expenditure. We conduct 2 x 2 ANOVA analysis to identify the effect of 2 variables in building consumer preference toward reward scheme. The subjects with high reward level tend to select the credit card company with preempt point reward system. In return, the subjects with low reward level lean toward the credit card with post-redeemed reward. In addition, we found that the subject's perception of uncertainty in relation to each reward scheme coincides with our expectation. Thus, we think that it supports hypothesis 2.
