Abstract
This study investigated the relationship among materialism, consumer value, and impulsive buying. We examined how materialism is related to consumer value, and subsequently, how this value is associated to impulsive buying. Additionally, we attempted to identify the mediating role of each subcategory of consumer value (i.e., quality value, social value, ethical value, and economical value) as well as consumer value as a whole in the relationship between materialism and impulsive buying. We thus propose the following research questions: 1. How is materialism related to impulsive buying? 2. How is materialism related to each subcategory of consumer value? 3. How is each subcategory of consumer value related to impulsive buying? 4. To what extent does each subcategory of consumer value mediate the relationship between materialism and impulsive buying? To answer those research questions, we distributed the survey to 374 participants aged between 20 and 69. Our data revealed positive correlation between materialism and impulsive buying. Materialism was positively associated with all subcategories of consumer value except for ethical value. Also, among subcategories of consumer value, quality value, social value, and economical value were shown to be associated with impulsive buying. Specifically, social value was positively, and quality value and economical value were negatively associated with impulsive buying behavior, respectively. Lastly, the analysis also revealed significant mediating roles of social value, quality value, and economical value in the relationship between materialism and impulsive buying. However, social value played a dominant role in mediating the relationship between materialism and impulsive buying.
