Abstract

Impulse buying seems to be a phenomenon that has been witnessed very often in consumer’s purchase situation. Although it is, as mentioned above, a consumer’s common behavior, impulse buying has been dealt with as a negative behavior socially. However, there is obviously an agreement on the fact that a hedonic element which is one of the consumption motivations and values is important. Impulse buying is one of the consumer’s behavior which is triggered by such a hedonic motive. Thus, it can be said that impulse buying provides a consumer with a specific shopping value, so-called hedonic shooping value. If impulse buying related to hedonic consumption gives the way for a consumer to meet his/her needs or satisfaction, it becomes a meaningful behavior helping to attain his/her consumption value he pursued. Therefore, it is thought that impulse buying also has some parts that can be evaluated positively. This study shows an impulse buying model first, because there are no proper models to explain it enough. The model presented in this study has a key to explain the impulse buying concisely and globally. Besides, underlying the logical evidents, this study is planning to explain impulse buying is not a wasteful behavior. Secondly, this study examines the traits of impulsive buyers. After dividing subjects into two groups: impulsive buyers and not impulsive buyers, we examine whether or not each group has different value about “hedonic shopping value”, “satisfaction after impulsive buying”, and “evaluation on impulse buying”. As results, impulsive buyers regard “hedonic shopping value” as a more important thing than another group, and they are more friendly to the impulse buying. Additionally, since emotional elements felt in consumption process have an effect on the satisfaction, they feel more “satisfaction after impulsive buying” than another group do. These results gives us a few implications. We get to know that impulsive buyers try to get the value they pursue, and also learn that they satisfy with the value acquired through the consumption process by themselves. Consequently, these results suggest that it be difficult to say impulse buying is wasteful. It is said that impulse buying is not necessarily something wasteful, but valuable consumers’ behavior.
