Periphrastic do plays a central role in the Modern English verbal structure. After pointing out the inconsistency of the other accounts concerning the origin of periphrastic do with the historical evidence I assume that periphrastic do comes from anticipative do in Old English, as advocated in Visser (1965-73). With this assumption, I propose to demonstrate that periphrastic do is base generated in the light v of vP in the framework of Minimalist program, against Platzack (2008)' arguments that periphrastic do is a spelled out version of light v. I also try to show that periphrastic do arose with the introduction of vP in Middle English, which explains how the different sentences with the same meaning such as I did not speak, I not spoke and I spoke not appeared at that time.
