초록
According to one strand of Jewish tradition, the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 represents Israel, and this means that Israel has the vocation of redemptive suffering. This reading of Isaiah 53 makes suffering itself as a God-ordained means through which Israel can advance God’s redemptive purposes. Against this reading of Isaiah 53, the present articles argues that the redemptive suffering of the servant in Isaiah 53 is not the vocation of Israel but the vocation of a new servant figure who restores Israel by playing multiple redemptive roles in a way no one else can. Given that this unique servant is identified with Jesus Christ, Christians’ suffering in mission can be redemptive precisely because they are united with Christ to participate in his unique redemptive suffering rather than because of the principle of suffering itself that makes Christian suffering redemptive apart from Christ.
