Abstract

Today, discussions on ‘religion and science’ or ‘theology and science’ are very active and abundant, and this also directly and indirectly influences various theological discussions. There are a number of factors that have led to this significant change, but one of them is the Gifford Lectures. This paper intensively analyzes important attempts that contributed to the abundant encounter between religion/theology and science in the Gifford Lectures. In particular, this paper focuses on Ian G. Barbour, Mary Midgley, and John Hedley Brooke & Jeffrey Cantor. First, Barbour, dealing with the four types of the relationship between religion/theology and science, showed that even data in science are theory-laden, and even nature is seen through models or paradigms. Second, Midgley pointed out that science is overly convinced of objectivity and that there is an uncritical bluff. Thus, while criticizing its limitations, she argued that psychological factors such as comprehensive world-pictures, myths, dramas, and fantasy form the imaginary background of human intellectual activity. Third, Brooke & Cantor opened up a variety of studies on the relationship between religion/theology and science by presenting several approaches within historical research. They went further to show that nature is reconstructed through the process of idealization, and that, in this course, even aesthetics plays a role to an certain extent. These scholars examined in this paper have enriched the relationship between religion/theology and science through each own discussion. So, through the work of this paper, we will be able to gain a rich and varied insight into the relation between religion/theology and science. And thus this will also provide people with valuable help in rethinking the relationship between the two today.
