본 소고는 영국 요크의 대주교를 역임했던 교회의 지도자이자 과학과 종교의 대화를 이끌었던 햅구드(1927-2019)의 자연에 대한 시각을 소개하고 있다. 본문은 특히 햅구드의 기포드 강연을 담은 저작 『자연의 개념』을 중심으로 자연에 대한 기독교의 관점이 어떻게 형성되어야 하는가에 대한 그의 분석을 소개해 나간다. 진리를 향한 분열되지 않은 마음을 강조했던 햅구드는 통전적, 유기체적 관점에서 자연과 과학을 바라볼 수 있는 시각을 제공해준다. 그의 담론은 하나의 실재, 하나의 진리를 향해 나아가는 경향이 있었다. 그의 진리관은 목적론적이면서 동시에 과학의 윤리적 책임을 강조하는 특성이 있다. 그는 종교적 근본주의와 과학만능주의의 양쪽의 극단을 경계하면서 과학과 종교가 상호 의존을 하는 가운데 목표를 향해 나아가는 동반자적 관계를 형성해야 함을 강조하곤 하였다. 자연을 바라보는 그의 시각에는 이와 같은 통전적, 대화적, 유기체적 시각이 반영되어 있다. 한편으로, 자연을 관찰하는 그의 시각은 다분히 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학적 시각을 수용하는 경향이 있는데, 이는 그가 생물학 분야에서 자연의 관찰과 종교의 문제를 다루기 시작했던 배경과 관계되어 있는 것으로 본문은 파악한다. 다른 한편, 그는 ‘실재’에 대한 질문을 끝없이 제기하며, 하나의 실재가 반영되어 있는 세계로서의 자연과 종교를 관찰하는 특징을 보여주고 있다. 햅구드가 기여한 이와 같은 대화는 오늘날 맥그래스를 비롯한 여러 후학들에게 큰 영향을 끼치고 있다.
Abstract
The following text introduces John Habgood’s (1927-2019) views on nature. Habgood was a church leader who served as the Archbishop of York in England, and led the dialogue between science and religion. As a theologian and a scientist who converted from atheism, Habgood was a leader who left great marks in the fields of bioethics and medical ethics. This text introduces his analysis of the Christian viewpoint of nature, especially based on his work “The Concept of Nature,” which contains his Gifford’s lecture. Habgood, who emphasized ‘an undivided mind’ toward truth, provides a perspective on nature and science from a holistic and organic point of view. According to A. E. McGrath, his discourse tended towards a single reality and a single truth. His view of truth is teleological and, at the same time, has the characteristic of emphasizing the ethical responsibility of science. He used to emphasize that science and religion should form a partnership to move toward a shared goal while being wary of both extremes of religious fundamentalism and scientism. On the one hand, he observes nature’s tends to accommodate Aristotle’s metaphysical perspective. This text presumes that this move is related to his background in the field of biology which he also applied to the problem of religion. On the other hand, he keeps raising questions of reality where both nature and religion are viewed as reflecting a single reality. Such conversation contributed by Habgood has much influence on McGrath and many other scholars today.
