Abstract
This paper, as the second year’s work on the Gifford Lectures conducted as a general joint research of the National Research Foundation of Korea, deals with attempts to reconstruct ‘nature,’ being based on the first year’s work on the Gifford Lectures. In particular, this paper focuses on Ian G.Barbour(1923-2013), Mary Midgley(1919-2018), and John Hedley Brooke(1944-present) & Jeffrey Cantor (1943-present), who have contributed to a rich encounter between religion/theology and science. Today the introduction of big history requires us to change our existing image or understanding of ‘nature’ significantly. This paper deals with the reconstruction of ‘nature’ attempted in the meeting between religion/theology and science. However, it does does not deal with big history itself in detail, but only focuses on how the understandign or image of 'nature' was formed and suggested in Barbour, Midgley, and Brooke & Cantor. In particular, this paper pays a special attention to what factors work in deconceptualizing some existing concepts of‘nature’ and in reconstructing ‘nature’ in accordance with the new era. Through this research this paper argues that, Barbour’s model and paradigm of ‘nature’ grounded in critical realism, Midgley’s criticism of objective mechanistic understanding of ‘nature’ and the restoration of awe, wonder and reverence, and Brooke and Cantor's importance of aesthetics in the reconstruction of ‘nature’ imply that we need to develop a new imagination of ‘nature’ today. This study could provide many implications on how the understanding of 'nature' should be changed both in college education and in college mission, which could, in turn, provide a more efficient meeting between them.
