Abstract
Recently, the “Back to Jerusalem Movements” are arising in part ofthe Korean Protestant Church as well as in the Mission field of universities, which bring an skewed perspective of Mission and an enthusiasticparticipation in the Mission to the Jews including theMuslims. Although the minor differences among the factions exist, they are on common ground in biblical literalism, the restoration ofIsrael in terms of Jewish lineage, and dispensational eschatology. Church-historically, the perspective of the Mission to the Jews experiencedan dramatic change in the 17th century. Philip JakobSpener, initiator of German Pietism, had overcome the long-standingAntisemitism since the establishment of Christianity, and on the otherhand revitalized the Jewish Mission in the context of his moderate futuristiceschatology, namely “Die Hoffnung besserer Zeiten für dieKirche”, which was different from the radical Millenarianism whichwas widely spread under the regime of Oliver Cromwell in England. His opinion distinguished itself from that of the orthodox lutheran theologians of the time who interpreted Rom 11:25ff. with referenceto the historical event of the Early Church. The uniqueness of Spener‘s perspective of the Mission to the Jewslies in the fact that he regards the genuine conversion of the Jews as agood example which born-again Christians ought to follow, and as anaccelerator of Christian Sanctification as well. In his opinion, the missionto the Jews requires Christians to become a living witness to theGospel that the eschatalogical salvation is already fulfilled in JesusChrist. He connected the Mission to the Jews with the reform of theChristian life of the time. It is necessary that the Korean “Back to Jerusalem Movements”which are inclined to take no account of the reform of the life andChristian Sanctification refer to Spener’s perspective of the Mission tothe Jews and other German Pietists’ concrete missionary works.
