Abstract
In the Johannine community, participating in the meal formed and re- inforced their community identity as “children of God”. In Greco-Roman meals, it meant maintaining the Pax Romana by agreement with Rome and participating in the complexity of identity provided by the various gods. Jewish meals demonstrated their purity through “separation” from impurity. On the other hand, the Johannine meal was eating and drinking “the flesh and blood of the Son of Man”. Through this meal, they experienced the peace of Jesus caused by this union with Jesus and thus defined their identity as “children of God”. The term “children of God” emphasizes their divine origin. At the same time, it demonstrates that they are missionary commun- ities committed to the mission of Jesus. In the meal, the Johannine commun- ity does not separate itself from the world, but rather formats their identity as missionaries who declare God’s love for and to the world.
