Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the relationship between the Johannine prologue and the Sacrament (Eucharist and Baptism) of the Johannine community. The other is to study the meaning of the rituals of the Eucharist and the Baptism and to understand what kind of spirituality that the Johannine community sought to pursue. The Logos-Theology and the story of John the Baptist in the Johannine Prologue would be a great help in understanding John's belief on the Eucharist and Baptism. First, the bread symbolizes Jesus, and eating the bread symbolizes being one with Jesus in the Gospel of John. The members of the Johannine com- munity become one with Jesus by eating bread. Furthermore, by eating bread, they become one with God because God, Logos, and Jesus are not different each other in Johannine theological system. In other words, the Eucharist is an important ritual in which members of the Johannine commun- ity are united with God. Second, water is an important material that symbolizes the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John. In other words, water symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Just as the bread symbolizes the flesh of Jesus, the water symbolizes the spirit of Jesus. Inevitably, the Baptism by water symbolizes the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The member of Johannine community who baptized with water be- comes one with the Holy Spirit. That is the reason why John the writer tried to turn the origin of Baptism to Jesus, not to John the Baptist. As members of the Johannine community were becoming one with the Holy Spirit, they would become one with the Spirit of Jesus, and become one with the Logos God. The Sacrament is very important means to maintain the spiritual life of the Johannine community. Through it the Johannine community completes their spiritual life of pursuing oneness with God.
