Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine Huldrich Zwingli’s idea of the relation between divine sovereignty and human freedom as presented in his writings. Specifically, this essay intends to prove that Zwingli’s view of divine providence and the effect of sin on human beings implies deterministic nature which denies the possibility of genuine human freedom and the existence of contingent events in the world. According to Zwingli, due to the effect of sin, human beings completely lost the ability to do spiritual good which truly pleases God. Namely, the freedom that remains in fallen human beings is the freedom to commit only sins. Regarding providence, he argues that human beings do not have free will and they are not properly causes in their roles. Moreover, in his discussion of the relation between providence and human sin, Zwingli insists that Godcompels humans to sin and they are just instruments of God in their roles. Consequently, his idea of divine providence and the effect of sin is deterministic and necessitarian in its nature.
