이 글의 목적은 『기독교강요』에 나타난 자유의지 개념을 정확히 이해하는데 있다. 칼빈에 따르면 하나님은 인간을 창조하실 때 건전한 이성과 건전한 의지를 주셨다. 그 결과 인간은 선악 가운데 하나를 선택할 수 있는 자유의지를 지닐 수 있었다. 칼빈은 선택가능성이라는 의미의 자유를 타락 이전의 아담에게 적용한다. 하지만 그의 관심은 주로타락 이후의 인간에게 있기 때문에 그는 인간의 성향이 선을 향해 고정되는 것을 참된 자유로 여긴다. 칼빈에 따르면 인간의 이성능력은 타락 이후에도 완전히 상실되지는 않았다. 그럼에도 타락은 인간 이성에게 악영향을 끼친다. 예를 들어 이성의 진리추구는 천상보다 지상을 향한다. 칼빈에 따르면 타락한인간의 의지도 완전히 없어지는 것은 아니다. 하지만 그 의지는 언제나 악으로 향할 수밖에 없다. 이를 통해 그는 강제로서의 필연과 자발성으로서의 자유가 양립 가능함을 보여주었다. 그러나 칼빈은 타락 이전의인간과 타락 이후의 인간을 구분함으로써 선악 선택가능성으로서의 자유의지가 타락 이전의 인간에게는 가능함을 보여준다. 이를 통해 칼빈은 당대의 신정론적 물음에 대처하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to understand the concept of free will in John Calvin’s Institutes in order to show that Calvin denies the concept of freedom as choice among alternatives. Calvin denies such concept of freedom for fallen human beings. Although some of the capacity of human reason still remains, reason is distorted. The habit or action of human will is always inclined to evil, although some of the capacity of human will still remains. Calvin admits the possibility of the freedom as choice among alternatives by distinguishing between the state before the Fall and after the Fall. The distinction is Calvin’s attempt to give answer to the question of the theodicy about human free will and God’s predestination.
