초록

이 연구는 유화례의 선교편지와 자서전, 그리고 남장로회 연례회의록 등의 일차자료에 기초하여 일제강점기 유화례의 교육선교를 중심으로 살펴보면서, 미국 남장로회 한국선교의 맥락과 일제의 식민통치 아래 있었던 한국교회와 사회에서 그의 선교활동이 갖는 교회사적 의의를 규명하고자 하였다. 특별히 유화례의 일제의 한국통치에 대한 인식과 자세, 한국사회와 교회에서 교육선교의 목적과 의의, 여성교육의 필요성과 비전에 주목하면서, 그의 선교활동에서 이러한 인식들이 어떻게 나타났는지 조명하였다. 유화례의 교육선교의 비전은 식민지교육의 대안으로서 기독교학교에서 학생들을 기독교 신앙과 가치로 교육하여 가정과 사회는 물론 교회를 섬기는 책임적인 지도자가 되게 하고, 한국과 아시아의 모든 민족에게 축복을 끼치는 인재를 양성하는 것이었다. 미션스쿨의 교육경쟁력을 위해 지정학교 인가를 추진하였고, 동시에 기독교적, 실용적 교육으로 가정과 교회와 사회를 이끌어 나갈 능력 있는 기독교 여성지도자를 기르는 미션스쿨 본연의 목적을 위해 교사들의 신앙훈련과 학생들의 신앙교육에 힘을 기울였다. 일제의 신사참배 강요에 타협하지 않고 학교폐쇄를 단행한 남장로회의 결정에 주도적 역할을 하면서 교육선교의 목적과 원칙을 끝까지 지켰다. 이 과정에서 일제의 천황제 국가주의 우상성과 군국주의 야욕을 비판하였고, 권위자와 지배자의 모습이 아니라 친구와 어머니로서, 학생과 동역자와 한국교회와 협력하는 모습을 보여주었다.

Abstract

This paper investigates Florence E. Root’s educational work and its significance for the Southern Presbyterian mission to Korea under the Japanese colonial rule by reviewing primary sources including missionary correspondence, autobiographies, minutes of annual meetings of the Korea mission, and other materials. Specifically, it examines her idea of mission to Korea - the awareness and attitude toward the Japanese rule over Korea, the purpose and principle of the educational work, and the necessity and vision for education of women, and illuminates how she displayed in her missionary work. Compared to the Japanese colonial education, Florence Root kept in mind the purpose and vision of Christian education for the mission school especially in Korea under the Japanese, that is, nurturing a capable, responsible Christian leader for church and society to bring the blessings to their own nation, the people of Asia, and the whole world by teaching them with Christian faith and moral values. She took charge of obtaining a license of the designated school for Speer, a central girl’s school of the Southern Presbyterian mission in order to achieve an educational competitiveness of the mission school, and also made an effort to strengthen the Christian identity and purpose to nurture a capable woman Christian leader with a Christian, practical education to serve the church and society. Against the Shinto shrine worship coerced by the Japanese, she took an uncompromising stand and played a leading role in the decision-making of closing down the Southern Presbyterian mission schools in Korea. She criticized the Japanese for deifying the emperor and the state while reproaching for their militaristic fanaticism. As a woman missionary treating herself as a friend or a mother, she cooperated with students, colleagues, and Korean Christians.
